Thinking of getting a KIA EV5. Happy to get a Hypervolt 3 charger but I do not want a monthly plan or smart charging. I just want to be able to plug in and charge overnight on cheap rate. Although I think I can get electricity at 14p KWH? Is that correct.

Is this rate limited to normal off peak hours or something else. If my son comes to stay will he be able to charge his KIA EV6.

It sounds as if I will have at least 3 apps. KIA, Hypervolt and OVO. Which one would I use to schedule charging. Also factor in my Duracell app although I don’t want to use electric from solar panels.
Hope this makes sense all very strange for an EV newbie.

thanks

Hi @Maidenstan54 ,

You need to use the OVO Charge app to get the 14p/kWh rates, but you DO NOT need to use a Monthly Plan - you can just pick PAYG and charge it directly to your OVO bill a la carte.

Charge Anytime DOES support overnight charging, you just set a Ready-By Time in the app to, say, 7am and your vehicle will charge overnight if it’s plugged in - but it may charge during the day at the cheap rate if plugged in sooner. CA rates are available 24/7/365 and there are no time restrictions. You can also charge any vehicle you want - the most you’d need to do is change the Ready-By Time in the app to suit. Otherwise, you can literally just leave it alone once it’s been set and plug-in whenever you need juice, the system will do the rest for you. It’s all done via the OVO Charge app but you’ll want the other two anyway to manage all the other stuff on the Charger and EV.

As you have Solar, you must integrate via the Hypervolt for CA to work properly, please do not connect via the Kia! If you don’t have the Charger yet, Hypervolt can rig it up in Solar-Compatible Mode by using a second CT Clamp. Have a chat with their team on 0333 090 3093 and they can advise on the best options.

Hey @Maidenstan54,

Welcome to our awesome community! 🎉 I’ve added a couple of badges for you to show off your electric vehicle and solar panels. It’s great to see who has green tech like yours as it really helps us all connect and learn from each other!

I can see Blastoise has already answered most of your question so far but just to add - all the electricity you use in your home and for smart charging will initially be charged at your standard home electricity rate. This is the rate you’ll see in your balance and on your bill.

At the end of the month, we’ll work out how much energy you've used to smart charge your EV. We'll use this to calculate how much credit we need to add to your account. This will be applied in the following month.

You can opt to change from pay as you go to monthly at anytime and If you’re switching from pay as you go to a monthly plan this will start at midnight the next day. The fee you pay and the mileage available will be adjusted to reflect the day your plan starts.

You can find more information in the article below and I hope this helps! If you’ve got any further questions please let us know.

Hi

Thanks for email. The first response I had seemed to imply that I would get the reduced rate for charging my EV at anytime of the day. Is that correct or do I only get the reduced rate in my off peak hours. I understand that the credit is given the following month. I just don’t want to get any shocks if I charge during peak periods.

thanks

The reduced rate for EV Charging on Charge Anytime works anytime of the day or night - peak and off-peak are the same rate.

Hi @Maidenstan54

There are also other options if you are looking at other suppliers too. I was with OVO until the 7-14p rise, then left for E.ON. Maybe not as attractive as a few months ago though.

For me the CA flexibility was the main bonus at OVO, but if you are content with overnight charging then you might find cheaper options.

I also have a Hypervolt Home 3 Pro.

As Blastoise186 has indicated, it must be integrated with the solar for correct CA operation. My installer initially failed to understand this and I had to get it corrected with the 2nd CT clamp.

There were some gripes with CA in that intermittently it failed to charge the EV, which is not uncommon. Now I just need and use the Hypervolt App with my KIA and it never fails.

Its very easy with 1 click to activate daytime charging if you so wish, obviously at the higher rates.

If you are new to EV also be aware the Hypervolt will need to be wired in a certain way to avoid solar/home battery discharge into an EV. Again another common problem.
