Hi there!

According to the Ovo usage tracker my house has used 299.5kWh of Gas since the first of November. I thought this perculiar as we have not had the heating on and our shower is a power shower, the only thing that gas is used for in the house is the hob and heating the hot water for the taps (washing up and washing hands).

I checked meter readings from today as well as comparing it to when we first moved in in July, and using an online calcuator calculated that the entire volume of gas that our meter has registered since moving in would only be around 200kWh.

Does anyone know how to solve this? Or at least explain why the usage tracker has such a skewed value? Our meter has only been sending readings to ovo once or twice a month, I don’t know if this is something that might have caused this. When I try to manually enter a meter reading I get an error as well.

Many thanks,

afbunn

If your meter isn’t sending readings then it does sound as if it may be estimated, and estimates can sometimes be much higher than they should be,

I’d check your online account, first the Meter Readings to see when they last got an actual reading from your meter.
If it’s been a while then you should be able to submit an up to date one manually there. (When you do the account usually changes quickly to use the actual reading, often within minutes),

What is the error message that you are getting when you try to submit a reading?
You could ring them with a reading, or use the webchat.

This is mine currently. I had a new gas meter fitted on the 18th and OVO don’t have any readings from it yet. (The last one they have is my manual one from just before the old meter was disconnected).

Next go to your Plan and see what the “Future Anual Consumption” says for the Gas.

How does it compare to your actual usage for the last 12 months.
FAC is used when estimating usage/bills, if it’s showing as too high there then any estimates will also be too high.

(Mine is a bit too high there, it should be about 8500-9000, but in the past it’s been as high as 32000 and as you can imagine any estimates then were 3x too high).

From what you say then you are a low gas user, and I’d suspect that instead of your actual usage your FAC (and so any estimates) may well be showing the “Industry Standard” for a normal use in your size of property, or even higher than that.

The trick to getting an incorrect FAC down again is to keep sending regular readings, your Smart Meter should be doing that for you - but if it isn’t then I’d send manual readings once or twice a week,
