Hi all,

Just moved into new rented accommodation with electric heating and water with a combi boiler which seems to be showing about £2.70-£3 an hour estimated cost on the smart meter when heating is on. When boiler is on and ticking over is even showing about £2.30 an hour even when heating is off.  Is anyone else on a similar system and know if this is normal as it seems a lot? Sorry have come from being on oil so not used to this type of heating.

Cheers

Chris

@Jeffus those links tell a tale of woe. What a shame as it’s got potential with all that wind power available in Scotland. In an ideal world the renewable power tariff would be peanuts and all those boilers could be working a treat. Is this the Total Heat Total Control I’ve seen Scottish customers talking about? now being phased out? Meanwhile @Chris0291 is going to have huge electricity bills. I hope that’s reflected in the rent?

I think @Chris0291 needs to speak to the manufacturer about the heating system and the best way to run it, also the landlord and any neighbours if they have the same system perhaps.

There must be an optimum way of using it to keep the bills reasonable with an appropriate tariff.

I was surprised i couldn't find more about the systems.

Are you on Scottish Power’s E2000 tariff ? This is from a happy customer testimonial on the thermaflow website

Economy 2000 is/was only available in MPAN Area 18, Central and Southern Scotland.

It appears to be a legacy RTS Meter setup which means future support is NOT guaranteed.

HELP ! We have just moved into our new build house, it has wet underfloor heating and an electric combo boiler, just had our first bill in and I nearly fainted, nearly £1,000 averaging out at £20.00 per day, any tips on what I can do to reduce this as I will be bankrupt at this rate ☹️😢

You have a conventional electric combi boiler so there's limited options for reducing your bills. I'm struggling to come up with anything except turning the thermostat down, which I'm sure you've considered already.

I have tried that, turned all upstairs off and turned the thermostat down but still worked out at £15 for the day !! Don’t know what to do as cannot afford  a £500 a month bill- have turned it off now !! Feel very miss sold, company states they are more efficient and cheaper than gas …

If they've stated that they're cheaper to run than gas, that's an outright lie and possibly a case for mis-selling.

A new gas boiler is around 90-95% efficient. An electric boiler is 100% efficient. But gas costs 10.4p per kWh while electricity is 34p per kWh. So an electric boiler will cost about 3 times as much to run as a gas boiler.

It is quite cold at the moment.

Would be worth seeing how the costs are when it is a bit warmer as £15 may be the top end. Although be aware unit rates are likely to go up on 1st April before falling hopefully

The saving grace is you have wet underfloor heating and it should be well insulated as a new build.

I am sure you don't want to do it now, but fitting an air source heat pump at some stage instead of the electric boiler would be worth investigating.

Thank you, yes we are looking at the air source heat pump, hopefully they come down in price !

@Dottie1965 are you in Scotland? Do you have off peak electricity? How long have you been running it for each day ? Does the underfloor ever get warm and do you know what temp the water in the underfloor is achieving ? How many rooms and bathrooms do you have?
Sorry for all the questions but it’s good to find out as much as poss to get some experience of your system.
