Can the DNO impose an export limit below 3.6kW?

I've recently had solar panel and battery installed but the local Welsh Dno imposed a limit of 2k on the export, which sounds very low.

Can they do that I thought they could only impose a limit from 3.6 upwards?

Hi @Krichards

I reached out to our Renewables team and asked them for some thoughts on this. This is what they came back with:

“The DNO only usually limit export below 3.68kW when there's already an existing generator (usually PV inverter) on site and they are looking at the total export limit. Without knowing the full detail it's difficult to comment much further”

I think speaking with the DNO directly would be a good idea if you haven’t already. You can find the list of DNO and their contact information here

Keep us updated if you find out any more information.

From what I recall, yes they can. But I’d have to dig into it pretty deep to find the exact details.

Thanks,  I just could not find anywhere that it said a DNO would not accept an export less than 3.6, I can imagine they can refuse outright if the equipment does not meet certain standards, but thought that past that they were obliged to support 3.6.

Thanks for that. There is no other source of export in place. We are in the countryside and the infrastructure is not great here, but even so... I'll take it up with the dno. Thanks

Hey @Krichards

Glad we were able to offer some helpful advice here.

Do let us know how you get on with the DNO, I’m sure it’d be helpful to other members in the community.🙂
