What is the Warm Home Discount (WHD)?

The Warm Home Discount is a one-off £150 discount given to eligible domestic electricity customers to help with their energy costs. It's usually paid between October and March of each scheme year. It's a Government scheme funded by participating energy suppliers like us. It’s designed to help people who need it most.

The Warm Home Discount (WHD) scheme is closed for the scheme year 2023/24 and will reopen again later this year.

Customers in Scotland can now register their interest in the WHD Scotland Broader Group for 2024/25.

You can register your interest via this form (if you fall into the Scotland Broader Group) but you can also find more information via these links:

OVO Broader Group: https://www.ovoenergy.com/guides/energy-guides/warm-home-discount-scheme

Boost Broader Group: https://www.boostpower.co.uk/help/support/how-do-i-get-the-warm-home-discount

When the Scottish Broader scheme re-opens we'll contact our customer by email to invite them to apply online.

It's a Government scheme funded by participating energy suppliers like us. It’s designed to help people who need it most.

Key changes in numbers

  • WHD spending is increasing from £350 million to £475 million across all suppliers

  • 780,000 more households will receive the rebate

  • 560,000 more fuel poor households will get help

  • The Warm Home discount rebate is increasing from £140 to £150

  • 59% of recipients under the new scheme will be fuel poor compared to around 47% of recipients for the current scheme

These changes will apply for the next four years.

England and Wales

If you live in England or Wales you don’t need to apply for the Warm Home Discount but you will need to meet the eligibility criteria set by the Government. This is split into two Core Groups:

  • Core Group 1 - for people who get Guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Core Group 2 - for people who get qualifying means-tested benefits or tax credits

The eligibility qualifying date for both groups is 13 August 2023. The Government will write to benefit claimants between October and December 2023.

What do I do if I don't get a letter?

In some cases the Government will write to you to request more information. It's important you give them this information by 28 February 2024 to be considered for the discount. We can only apply the discount once we’ve been told to by the Government.

Core Group 1

To be considered for the discount:

  • You or you partner were named on the domestic electricity bill on 13 August 2023.
  • You were supplied by part of the OVO Family on the 13th August. If you were supplied by another supplier participating in the scheme on the 13th August, that supplier will be told to give you the discount even if we're now supplying you.
  • You or your partner got the Guaranteed element of Pension Credit on the qualifying date.

Core Group 2

To be considered for the discount:

  • You or you partner were named on the domestic electricity bill on 13 August 2023.

  • You were supplied by part of the OVO Family on the 13th August. If you were supplied by another supplier participating in the scheme on the 13th August, that supplier will be told to give you the discount even if we're now supplying you.

  • You or you partner receive the following qualifying means-tested benefits or tax credits:

    • Housing Benefit

    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

    • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

    • Income Support

    • The 'Savings Credit' part of Pension Credit

    • Universal Credit

You could also qualify if your household income falls below a certain level and you get either:

    • Child Tax Credit

    • Working Tax Credit

  • Your property has a high energy cost score. This is partly based on details of your property like its type, how old it is, and the overall floor size etc. The Department for Works & Pensions (DWP) will work with the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to work out your property energy score. The Government will write to you if they need more information.

Please note that OVO’s Support team aren’t in a position to advise you on your benefits or warm home discount eligibility. If you’re not sure of any of the details above, Citizens Advice are well place to offer help and support.

Scotland

If you live in Scotland, there are two groups:

  • Core group - you won't need to apply, but you must meet eligibility criteria.
  • Broader group - you'll need to apply for the discount which will be applied on a first come, first served basis.

Hi @Kmc1979 welcome to the forum and thanks for your post.

Sorry to learn you've not had the warm home discount yet. As you say it should have been credited to your meter by now so the best option would be to send @Emma_OVO a private message with your full name, address, OVO account number & date of birth - Emma will then be able to look into your account and let you know where the WHD payment is.

Hope this helps

I've moved your query here so it's with other Warm Home Discount (WHD) queries.

As @Mattj3135 mentioned, if you send me a PM with your full name, DoB and account number, I'll chase up your payment for you.

Hope this helps,
Emma
Hello.

I know this topic hasn't been replied to in 3 months but I hope you are still able to help with my query.

I am currently with EDF Energy and after a price comparison have put in a switch to OVO, as my contract at EDF is ending soon.

When I did the comparison I asked only for suppliers that offer the warm home discount to be listed. I am however a little unclear as to whether I would actually be able to apply for the 2017/2018 scheme as a new customer switching at this time? I recall I did with EDF last year after switching, but I know different companies have different terms and I can't find a definite answer on your website.

I would be in the broader group as someone that is in receipt of income based employment and support allowance with a disability premium.

I rely very much on the discount and so if this won't be offered to me as a new customer I will cancel the switch and stay with EDF. This would end up being more cost effective with that £140 credit.

I hope you can confirm this for me either way. Thank you.

Hey @asortafairytale- we’re still here. :)

The good news is that you can apply! The applications aren’t open just yet but you can pre-register your interest in applying for the Warm Home Discount here: https://docs.google.com/a/ovoenergy.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdlQQAeHNKMe_5BtqzINRoBHkab_au3Va0wSLy4ePBKed_yPg/viewform.

Please note that the applications work on a first come, first serve basis so for the Broader group, we can’t guarantee that you’ll receive the discount.

So when are the applications going to be open for the WHD 2017/18?

Surely you are able to tell us that at this stage. I'm not asking about so called pre-registration - simply APPLICATIONS - when can one officially apply?

A straight answer would be very much appreciated. Don't fob us off! Many thanks.

It'll soon be Christmas - and it's getting colder by the day!

Hiya!

If you’re on OVO Pay Monthly, the credit goes into a shared wallet anyway so it’ll go towards whichever fuel needs it.

If you’re on Boost PAYG however, it’s electricity by default with Smart Meters. If you get vouchers, you might be able to use them on gas instead.

This is because just about everyone in the UK has an electricity supply, but not everyone has gas and the WHD is meant to be usable in as many possible circumstances as people who qualify to get it.

Thanks so much

Hi,

I assumed I’d applied and recieved it this year but now I’m worried that I might have forgotten to apply. I’m eligable because I’m disabled, I’m too young to get it automatically.

It used to be quite simple to see the discount applied but OVO have changed the way our info is displayed so I’m wondering if it’s still possible for others to see it.

I checked my sept-nov bills and can’t see it.

Hey @Amaryllis ,

If you’re in Scotland, you need to apply manually. Otherwise it’s fully automated.
