Flex Event!

Flex Event

i am happy to try and take part in these events to help out OVO with its energy usage, plus get a minuscule amount in return, still, it’s better than the previous project. Again, this isn’t always a positive experience. I had a power down event. I was away, therefore the only thing on the house was the smart meter and two fridges. Maybe I need to turn them off to earn £0.15p!!

My question is, Why send an email at 7.10am informing me of a Flex Event for a period after the qualifying time of 12.00am - 03.00am. I can’t even try to achieve it!
Another great idea OVO.

Hey @GilDean@EvanD & @brichard

The Power Move Flex team made an error with the dates, so the actual event is 12 midnight tonight—3am and will be a power-up event. During this time, you can use as much energy as you need to help hit the targets, so if you have any appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, or tumble driers, this is the time to use them. You could set a timer at any point today so these can come on automatically during the event tonight.

I'm sorry for any confusion this caused you all. You'll get an updated email today to confirm, as they're working on amending it now.

I got the same email! And I could have actually participated in this one.

If only I had a flux capacitor!

I think this is all testing. They are trying to work out how people react to different events with different lengths of notice. I think you will see all sorts of things that on the face of it don't seem to make sense. They are just trying to work out what works and how well.

Yes, I had that email too and queried it with the online chat this morning. I've now had an email saying the power up is 12am to 3am 25th October so it's tonight. Everyone should be getting that email with the correction.

As I have said elsewhere, OVO might not get into these tangles if they stopped using the meaningless times of 12am and 12pm and used midnight and noon, or at least 12 midnight or 12 noon.

Hi @DuncanL,

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll pass this on to the team!

There are other consequences for rational people, too. 12am must mean ‘midnight before noon’, so 12am Friday must mean midnight Thursday-Friday - or does it? Is that what you would understand by ‘midnight on Friday’?

Midnight belongs to both of the days it comes between. You can see this on OVO’s billing and meter readings pages:

Billing treats the reading as if it applied to the end of the day. The readings listing treats the same reading as if it were at the start of the day. They’re both correct. It would be interesting to see how they would appear if the time the reading was taken were also given.

I don’t think am/pm thing means that there is anything wrong with OVO billing but it’s just that, as you say, 12am and 12pm both really mean midnight.  One means 12 hours before noon and the other means 12 hours after noon.  They are 24 hours apart not 12.

I suppose it’s just a a bit annoying to see OVO using the terms 12am and 12 pm without understanding what they mean - much like listening to sports commentators who think kilometre is pronounced differently from kilogram and centimetre !
