Happy New Year!

Has PowerMove actually been extended for January '25?

Welcome @Sanka14 , and Happy New Year!

Yep, I can confirm that Power Move is still running this month with the same rules as in the October to December 2024 challenge.

As a reminder, you want to move usage away from the Peak 4pm to 7pm slot on Weekdays. All usage outside of that time on Weekdays and all usage on Weekends (regardless of time) counts as Off-Peak. The targets are the same as before as well.

Good luck!

Some great advice here from Blastoise186 already, Power Move will continue, if we make any changes to the challenges etc we’ll notify all customers.

I’ve never had storage heaters or an electric immersion heater: I moved my washing machine and dishwasher usage to overnight, and moved cooking activities to later in the evening in order to MOVE my usage away from the 4-7pm peak time. Still EXCLUDED for some reason.

Who can join?

To be eligible to join a Power Move challenge, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be an OVO customer and have energy supplied by us
  • Have the OVO app and have joined Beyond
  • Have a working electricity smart meter
  • Have a credit meter
  • Have a single rate meter (not Economy 7 or Economy 10) or Charge Anytime or Heat Pump
  • Have an active Direct Debit
  • Have an active email address set up with OVO
  • Be opted into half-hourly meter reads for billing (you can do this when you join)
  • Be opted into half-hourly meter reads for settlement (you can do this when you join)

Please note: Not all meter types work with Power Move. Unfortunately, this means customers with multi-rate meters, like Economy 7 and Economy 10, can't join Power Move.

You can find out more about how Power Move works on our FAQs page.

Thanks!

Then I will keep going this month, too - after managing to hit the target 2 months in a row. December: average peak use 5.03%. Bill deduction most welcome!

In October, those amongst us with multirate meters were excluded for some undisclosed reason. It was stated that OVO were working on a solution. I wonder if they have sorted this issue yet?

I have no updates at this time.

However, my understanding is that support will likely return in the future once it’s possible to have E7/E10 support that actually makes the challenge worthwhile.

Thanks you for your reply. It was certainly worthwhile for me, as I achieved the target every month, until it was withdrawn. Maybe the company decided that they were actually giving something away and it was costing too much?

Nope! Something else entirely.

Let’s just say those on E7/E10 were claiming the lions share of the rewards, which made it a little too overpowered and unbalanced - which isn’t fair on everyone else.

As an E7 consumer I too will be interested to see why we have been excluded from Power Move and the way forward for future involvement. Also seem to remember they moved this to direct debit customers only excluding all others who I believe should be included if their account is in good order (ie. regular payments made on time).

Yep!

So nothing at all for those who use power overnight when there is power to spare…

The idea of Power Move is to move usage out of Peak slots e.g. make dinner at more flexible times. Strictly speaking, firing up Storage Heaters between midnight and 7am is not moving usage around because you’ve always run them at those times and it contributes nothing to moving Peak usage around. I’d argue that shouldn’t qualify for PM just for that reason alone!

If support for E7/E10 does get restored, do not be surprised if usage from Storage Heaters or Immersion Heaters gets excluded completely.

As for the Pay On-Demand thing, I wish to remind you all that Pay On-Demand is considered the most risky payment method in terms of non-payment/non-compliance by a significant margin compared to Direct Debit or PAYG. It could be said that it’s not appropriate to be giving rewards to those who fail to pay on-time…

Ultimately, Power Move is part of OVO Beyond now - and it’s OVO Beyond rather than PM that has the DD rule. Your options are migrate to DD and enjoy PM, or stay on POD and accept you can’t have the fancy stuff. Worth noting that being on DD also gives you cheaper rates...

If you are on ANY kind of Multi-Rate Metering setup, there is no way for OVO to know exactly what you might do with it - even with Smart Meters - so it has to be assumed you’re probably using something that requires a Multi-Rate setup because well over 90% of those setups DO have something that needs it.

It’s the only way to make it fair. Trying to whitelist some E7/E10 setups while blacklisting others is just a rabbit warren that OVO cannot jump into.

If you want to talk about the Multi-Rate exclusion stuff further, I’d recommend doing so in one of the many threads that already exist about it, rather than jumping on random unrelated threads - otherwise it just gets confusing.

I have obviously made a mistake in my understanding of Weekends. I have been curtailing power usage between 16:00 and 19:00 hrs on Saturday and Sunday.

Basically I No longer need to curtail power Saturday and Sunday. Is that correct?

Errrrm why have e7 or e10 if you don't have storage heaters. The increased day rate you get spanked with makes no sense to have off peak rates if you don't use them for storage heaters. No point just to load shift washing and dishwasher or tumble dryers as they use next to nothing compared to storage heaters

That is correct. However, while moving your usage around on Saturday/Sunday is optional, it’ll still count towards your targets so there’s no penalty either way.

To all who don’t like the restrictions that OVO impose:

Energy suppliers compete for your business and they must provide competitive terms and conditions in order to keep you as a customer. I’m not here to promote other suppliers but even as a forum volunteer I’m free to say the I’m with Agile Octopus. The tariff and T&Cs mean that I can get a much cheaper deal by flexing my energy use to my advantage in a way that is not possible with OVO. It is up to individuals to look at the totality of their contract with their supplier and decide which tariff is to their greatest advantage. Some suppliers don’t have the restrictions that you talk about that OVO impose. If you don’t like particular restrictions you can either put up with it and hope that your comment will effect some kind of change, or change who supplies your energy if you find them unacceptable. I’m not advocating that anyone jump ship but it is entirely YOUR decision what you do. Find the tariff that suits your needs and ability to flex your power demand because that is how you find your cheapest option and bearable restrictions.

BTW I went to Agile in March last year. I save a lot compared with the last OVO tariff I was on (SVR) and even losing the Power Move rewards Agile is far, far cheaper for me in my particular circumstances where I can flex my power use to the extreme. I had to do that a few weeks back when the peak rates reached £1 a unit (the Agile cap) but we were able to fall back to non-electric heating (wood burner) and cooking (gas) and a very small amount of electric for the TV and efficient lighting during the peak. On the worst day I lost 70p compared with the SVR. On the plus side we’ve had quite a few days during the year when power was free overnight (or even negative) so it cost nothing to charge the car and heat the house. On the best day I saved over £10.

Peter

Likewise, it must be said that OVO Power Move doesn’t punish you for NOT hitting targets either. If you don’t succeed, you literally just pay the exact same amount as you would have done without PM.

If anything, PM costs OVO money if you win - they don’t make a profit off of it.

I’d like to see an official response from OVO on this matter - I don’t think it helps anybody to get into a tit for tat situation.
