Could my high usage be because of a gas leak?

I’ve only just read my bill for 1st Dec 24 - 1st Jan 25, and realised that my USAGE for this period was higher than 12 months prior, despite me now having an electric cooker; the gas central heating was turned off for 9 days whilst I was away for Christmas and New Year.  I did find a gas leak in early January which OVO had shut off for me (I’m disabled) until the Council found the fault; could this be the cause?  If so, could I claim it back off OVO/ the landlord? 2.  Why is my smart meter showing the same usage, reporting it as for a cooker, as it did when I had a gas cooker, when I have zero gas appliances in my house?  I’m confused/skint!!

If you believe you have a gas leak or can smell gas Call the 24-hour National Gas Emergency service on 0800 111 999. You can find out more about gas and electric emergencies here.

Hi @Sammy J,

Welcome to the OVO Forum 😁. Thanks for your post - I can see @BPLightlog has got back to you with some really helpful info. Let us know about the gas leak, and whether it was before the meter (the pipework running from the street to the meter) or after the meter (the pipework / appliances in your home). I’m glad to hear that the leak was sorted and, with regards to compensation for this, you’d need to chase up the your Gas Transporter if the leak was before the meter. If the leak was after the meter, in your home, then you’d need to speak to the Council about compensation. If the leak was actually coming from the meter itself, then this would be a complaint with OVO, and you’d need to contact our Support Team about this.

Regarding your usage - have you checked the bill for the same period last year? You can download your bills via your app or online account. Here’s a previous Forum topic that explains how to do this:

When comparing usage from one year to the next it’s important to check a few things. Were readings submitted for both months in question, or was some of it based on estimates? As @BPLightlog has suggested, the gas leak would definitely have caused higher gas usage if the leak was after the meter, in which case you could provide both bills to the council when chasing for compensation. Weather can also be a huge factor with usage. For example, if you have your thermostat set to 18 degrees, then your boiler will be working harder to get the radiators up to temperature on a colder day. If my memory serves me correctly, this winter may have been colder than last winter. I’ve personally used more gas than I did last winter because of this.

I hope this helps, and please do reach out if you have any more questions!

If the leak was after the gas meter, then it would have been recorded as usage.
The other thing to check is if your usage on your account is showing as actual (from a true reading) or estimated which happens when no up to date reading is available.

When you see suggested appliance usage, it is simply a guess, not something that’s actually measured per appliance

Thank you for responding.  My apologies as I’ can’t remember what I originally clarified.  I am on a smart meter, I’d checked my usage on my bills vs last year; it was this slightly higher usage (not just my bill) that raised concerns due to me being away for 9 days.  Otherwise, due to my disability, my digital thermometer is on constant from September through to at least the beginning of May; I understand that this is arguably more efficient in cold weather?

The leak was in a pipe feeding the boiler; based on what you’ve explained, its council responsibility.  Yes Cadent were excellent, turning up extremely quickly to turn of the supply.

Thanks again for your help
