My smart meter has never once communicated with OVO in 3 years, does that rule out most EV tariffs?

Maybe looking towards an EV, but my smart meter is housed in a cellar behind a 2 foot stone wall, and hence no readings to ovo in the last 3 years.

They have been out to replace the meters in the vain hope that this might fix the issue, but the signal can’t get through the thick walls.

So as the meter can’t be read remotely, does this mean that most of the EV tariffs are not available due to this lack of communication ?

Our terms & conditions state that in order to get Charge Anytime a customers smart meters need to be communicating.

  • You must have a smart meter that can communicate half-hourly data to OVO Energy – currently the main types of smart meters that work with Charge Anytime are SMETS2 meters by any manufacturer, and SMETS1 meters manufactured by Secure;
  • You have to opt in to sharing half-hourly smart meter data with OVO Energy. If you aren’t currently opted in to sharing half-hourly data you agree that we can automatically update your preferences if you select the Charge Anytime add-on;

Hi @Petewaddy ,

If your meters don’t get a signal, then I’m afraid you are right - most EV Tariffs - and OVO’s Charge Anytime Add-On - will be inaccessible to you.

You may want to look into having the meters moved upstairs to somewhere the signal might be stronger, or at very least see if an upgraded external aerial might help.

Can you show us photos please, as we might then be able to give you more accurate advice.

Thanks!

We are in the north and so use Arqiva’s LRR, so as I recall there are no external antennas available for these meters.

having previously discussed this issue of non communications with ovo, there doesn’t seem there’s a lot that can be done apart from actually moving the meter, or some “network improvements “ on Arqiva’s side improves the signal.

I’m afraid that is 100% true if you’re on the Arqiva WAN - the external aerials aren’t available for those Comms Hubs.

I’ll ask our internal Charge Anytime team & see if they have any additional advice for you @Petewaddy. It seems a shame you might miss out on an EV tariff for an issue outside of your control.
