Swirching to Ovo monthly DD from prepayment with EDF

Edit: I meant PAYG smart meters, not prepayment

I'm due to switch over to Ovo tomorrow from EDF, who we've got PAYG smart meters with. There is still credit on both meters.

1. What will happen to that credit when we switch?

2. Can we switch from PAYG smart meters easily?

From what I've read, this isn't as straight forward as I thought it would be.

Any help would be much appreciated!

If you’re a pay as you go customer who’s vulnerable or relies on your supply for mains powered electrical equipment (supply critical customers) & we’ve been trying to reach you it may be because you’ve not topped up in a while & might be without power. If we aren’t able to get in touch we will send a visitor (after 72 hours of being off supply) to check in and talk about how we can help.

Evening @FluffySheep ,

Firstly, welcome! The name’s 186, Blastoise186 and I’m one of the Forum Volunteers who helps out here. I don’t work for OVO myself though so I can’t access accounts.

I can, however, answer those questions for you.

What will happen to that credit when we switch?

Your meters will temporarily switch to Credit Mode during the transition so that your supply stays on and you’ll have unlimited credit until the switch is completed. You’ll need to pay it back later, so try not to push it too hard though!

EDF will wipe all existing credit from the meters - you’ll get this back as a refund within six weeks.

Can we switch from PAYG smart meters easily?

Yes, this is possible - and would NOT require a meter swap if you’ve got Smart Meters. Once the switch is fully completed, you’d just need to call 0330 175 9669 and someone in PAYG Support can help make the arrangements for you as well as talk you through the process.

Thanks for the quick reply and for the information! I'll give that number a ring once we've switched :)

Hey @FluffySheep

Welcome to the OVO Online Community

I can see one of our community members has already given a helpful response here. Just wanted to add we have a PAYG area on the forum with tons of useful resources:

We also have a video tutorial series for customers with smart meters 😊
