EcoDan flow temp dropping over night at coldest time

I have noticed that over night the flow temp drops a lot and our upstairs temps fall quickly.

Downstairs is very nice and warm.

Could anyone help explain what might be happening here?

My curve is 45@0 and 20@20. As you can see in the graph the flow temp was at its coldest when the temp outside was coldest. Graph is a 24 hour period.

Hmm. As I feared your installer had little interest in the running costs of your heat pump. That insulation is poor. You can improve matters and it won’t cost a huge amount. Screwfix, B&Q etc sell that grey foam pipe insulation. Your pipes there will be 28mm and poss 22mm. Every pipe that feels hot should be properly covered, as any gap will mean a little bit of heat loss.

It’s easy to cut with a bread knife or similar, cut at angles to fit it tightly together and round bends so there are no gaps. I used the little clips to hold it together as I found tape didn’t stick.

Make sure you keep a note of what it looked like before you make improvements and keep receipts if you’re going to demand reparations from your builder!!!

Taking a guess here: I’m assuming you have radiators upstairs, is the water struggling to make it round the circuit into the upper rooms ? Do you have TVRs fully open in all bedrooms ? Is the cooler bedroom at the furthest point from the pump ?

No. We moved in November last year. It’s a new build.
There are many complaints of poor upstairs heating on the estate.
£18 on electric yesterday and the upstarirs rooms didn’t get above 16/17

You should definitely get the installers back !! Do you know who they are ? Where in the country are you ?

Can you post a photo of the back of the outdoor unit please, showing the pipe work. That’s often a guide to how conscientious the installer has been.
I would say 45 deg C flow temp is high for UFH so maybe your unit is struggling in this cold weather, let’s rule out if it’s been poorly installed.

Any other photos of your kit would be useful.

…I’ve just looked back over your previous thread from last year. Did you get it running ok in the warmer months ? Did you get the wireless controller ?

Honestly the upstairs is never warm. Gets the solar gain in the day but when the temp drops there feels like nothing going into the rooms at all.
Many other residence have pointed out underlay and carpet is not the correct spec and also very thick timber floor.

Do you know who the installers were ?

As this is a public forum I hope you won’t mind if I share these pics and your situation on LinkedIn ? There are top hp installers I’m following who may be able to advise.

There’s a company called PrimaryPro who sell proper outdoor grade insulation. If you see how it should be done you can see how bodged that insulation is. It’s an awkward job to retrofit in that small space between the wall and the back of the unit, it would make a difference though as you’re losing heat through all that bare metal. That would be a start.

@razor do you or any of your neighbours have any paperwork at all from MCS or details of the installer ? Or indeed the developer, builder, heating design engineer etc.

@juliamc the company that provided the UFH is Therma Floor and the company that provided the heat pump and cylinder etc is Daly Group

The website for Daly Group makes no mention whatsoever of heat pumps !!! I wonder if they’ve ever installed them before, or since. They also don’t mention MCS, which if it had been a gas boiler upgrade they would have had to had accreditation from, so no help there.
Are you able to remove an area of carpet and underlay in an upstairs room and feel if the flooring board it getting any heat ?

I think all roads lead to you getting back to the builders and heating company. Best to get your neighbours together to tackle this problem.

Do you have a service agreement for the Ecodan ?

@juliamc Hi!

we don’t have a service plan although we’ve been in a year so should sort that out.
Many residents have put I a formal complaint in the last few days. The cold weather has highlighted how poor the performance is. My money is on the composition of the floor on top of the UFH.

  1. get some better insulation on your outdoor pipe work, that’s the first place you’re losing heat and money
  2. get the carpet and underlay up so it stops blocking the heat to the bedrooms
  3. see if you can get a figure for the COP (coefficient of performance) from the Ecodan and use it to add to a formal complaint to the builder/developer. The COP ought to be at least 3.5 or thereabouts, higher would be better

Thanks.
is there any comment on the thickness of the timber floor boards? As per the pictures above?

I read somewhere that 18mm thick was ok but that was on a diy forum, they said 25mm was too much. Haven’t heard from any installers (still hoping). You could post your pics on Facebook there’s an installer called Paul Spence who has a Fb page called Heat Pumps UK.

Can you post a photo of the pipe work indoors, ie where those primary pipes come into the garage (I think you said that’s where your controller etc is).

@razor you could try asking an installer who is guaranteed by HeatGeek to look over your system and list what’s wrong with it. There’s one I’ve found that covers your area though I don’t know if they’d offer this kind of auditing service. They’d charge I’m sure but it would be money well spent. Try https://earthnrg.co.uk

@juliamc thank. I found these via the heat geek site. Was going to drop them a mail today to arrange exactly as you suggest.
