Question

Moving from OVO

Greetings,

Due to the recent news the OVO is more than likely going to be sold to E.on I decided it was time to switch suppliers for my duel fuel.

While I’ve never switched suppliers before, am I right in thinking that the companies will sort everything out between themselves and from OVO’s point of view I should be good once I manually send my monthly meter readings due on the 23rd of May as that’s the day that seems logical to switch on.

Will providing those meter readings to OVO be enough (along with a picture of meters for security’s sake for records) to see the transition go smoothly from this end?

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

Woo

Hey @Woojee,

We’re really sorry to see you go! We wanted to let you know that we have some handy articles about the home moving process available in our library. You can check them out at this link: your guide to moving home, joining or leaving OVO.

As part of the switching process, we’ll take care of submitting your meter readings to your new supplier, and they’ll submit their own readings, too, so everything matches up smoothly.

Remember, even though you’re leaving OVO, you can still keep your Forum account! We have a wonderful community with members from various suppliers who are here to help and offer support if you ever need it. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

Technically, you just need to contact your new supplier asking to switch from your current supplier. They will do the rest. If any of your meters are not smart meter, probably, it would be good to take the readings on the day you request the switch and submit them them to your current supplier.

Regarding the OVO being sold to EON, it hasn’t been approved by the regulator yet. If succeeded, I assume it would take some months to happen. It isn’t something happening right now.

Morning @Woojee,

Just to confirm, if you did stay with OVO, we will be operating as normal for some time yet and, if the acquisition does happen, you’d still remain on supply, and would eventually become an Eon customer.

If you’ve been providing regular readings, then you won’t need to supply any photos when you switch. You’ll just need to give your opening meter readings to the new supplier when they ask for them. They’ll then send these readings off to be validated by the wider Industry, and they’ll then be sent to OVO so we can produce your final bill. It really is a simple process, and the new supplier will handle it all for you as @costeek has said.

Let us know how you get on, and if you have any further questions.

Appreciated. I have no real reason to move but after being sold from SSE to OVO, and now OVO to E.on, I think I’m ready to start making my own choices at this point. Things seem to be going smoothly and my switch is due to take place on the 27th of May.

I appreciate your help (and fellow members) with this and previous questions. Wishing you all the best!

Regards,

Woo!

Wishing you all the best @Woojee and hope the switch goes smoothly for you. I can understand how you feel when you keep on getting moved from supplier to supplier and none of that is what you wanted or expected. Feel free to come back on here if you have any questions although we won't t be able to be so specific with our answers if they relate to your new supplier.

Peter

Just out of interest, my balance is currently positive and have about £160 in credit. I have recieved an e-mail from Ovo saying they can potentially keep taking the DD from my bank for a month and a half or maybe longer (switch date is 27th May). So technically another £150 minimum from me if that happens.

When it comes time to refunding me, will it go directly back to my bank or will they send me a cheque?

I honestly do not wish to deal with such an archaic payment method that requires time and effort on my part to cash it in (not only that, but it’s incredibly difficult for me to leave the house and getting people to help outside of the house for these things).

I’m currently debating about stopping my DD due to this and just letting Ovo eat up the existing balance so I don’t have to deal with a cheque.

Thanks again for your time!

Regards,

Woo!

Morning again @Woojee,

That’s a good question to ask! Feel free to cancel your Direct Debit, and we’ll just take the final bill amount from your balance. If you have any balance left to pay, then you can make a manual card payment for the remainder. If you have any balance remaining in credit, we’ll refund it back to your bank.

To confirm, when you cancel your Direct Debit, you’ll receive an email requesting that you set it back up. This email is automated - feel free to ignore it.

I hope this helps, and best of luck with your new supplier. As @Peter E says, you’re more than welcome to continue using this Forum for any more energy related questions, even after you’ve switched. 😊

If you do online banking using an app there’s usually a way to pay in a cheque by scanning it on your phone/tablet.

Hiya Julia,

Thanks for this. I didn’t know that was a thing. the banking app does indeed allow me to deal with cheques. Appreciate that :)
