Anyone affected badly by the change in the DD calculation, please see this thread and consider adding a vote:

Our community members have given some really helpful responses here. Just wanted to add the following:

Blastoise is right, if you give us some more information we’ll be able to give a more specific response @Snoopy34 😊

At this risk of this original thread being merged with the OVO DD Tutorial, I’m going to ask the question again to which I haven’t yet seen an answer (either in the DD Tutorial thread or elsewhere).

I recently queried why my DD payment was being calculated out to March 2026 - when my fixed price (FP) contract with OVO finished in October 2025.  I learnt that OVO were apparently aligning all their customer DD’s such that they achieved a £0 balance by March 2026.  This was obviously irrespective as to whether you were on a Fixed Price agreement that expired before that date (and presumably a FP agreement that expired after that date) or whether you were on a variable price agreement.  So far so understandable, although I still maintain it is a big assumption by OVO that customers on a FP will remain with OVO after their FP agreement comes to an end before March 2026.

The thing I’m still looking for an answer for is what methodology will OVO use as a means to calculate a customers monthly DD payments after this date.  Presumably and in the interests of fairness OVO will use the next 12 month demand period (April 2026 to March 2027) thereby incorporating fair representation of a customers annual demand (i.e. the low demands of Spring and Summer and the higher demands of Autumn and Winter).

Will this be the case or is there some other methodology planned?

NB.  If there is no answer to this question as yet,  then I’d be happy to be told this, but at the same time, be given an indication of when such an answer may be available to customers.  This is because DD payment methodology is something that customers, such as myself, value second only to the energy price being offered by an energy supplier and I wish to make an informed choice when it comes to choosing my next supplier.

Hey @Corgimajor

I’ve not been made aware of a methodology beyond the current calculation.

I’ll ask this query internally & get back to you.

Hi all

I haven't used this forum before but just wanted anyone's take on what's just happened. I signed up for the free 2 hours energy and just this morning 12/5/25 have chosen my preferred hours. Almost the same time I signed up I received an email advising that OVO were increasing my DD by £11 per month to run in line with my 2 year fixed tariff (due to run out August 2026). I couldn't choose to increase by an amount of my choice. Maybe just a coincidence but wondered if this has happened to anyone else at the same time you signed up? A sort of give in one hand and take with the other! 🤔

Thanks in advance 😊

Totally unrelated - these are triggered by different things altogether.

Your DD goes into a “wallet” that the bills pull from. You may find it useful to double check a few of the guides around the Forum.

I have just been told that I cannot reduce my £180 pm direct debit to reflect the actual monthly usage of £70 pm … is this correct?

They need to sort out the algorithm that gets used. Our DD is currently £138 the lowest I can reduce it to. With that figure it thinks I'll be - £69 by March 2026, which is utter rubbish! On average our bill is £100, some as low as £80 and as high as £120 every now and again, we're currently £400 in credit! The reason for this nonsense is that they obvioulsy calculate the DD by taking the headline cost of energy used which for us in Feb-Mar for example was about £150 BUT as we have a EV we get this reduced via charge anytime credit taking the actual bill down to around £100. So EVERY month we're over paying depending on how many miles the wife does in her EV for work, some months we get around £100 credit back. And it's only going to get worse when I get an EV later this year as I do around 250miles a week 🤬

I got caught by this as well. I wondered if they used the average monthly usage in prior years to calculate the expected usage and hence the DD. We got solar a couple of years ago, so our monthly use has changed dramatically. I have careful calculations of actual usage and costs, but couldn’t convince Ovo to change my DD. The minimum they want is coming down every month as actual usage is available to their algorithm.

You can contact OVO and ask them to reduce it. They assume that you would need to pay that amount of money each month (including Winter) to keep your account balance positive by March 2026. But “assume” doesn’t mean that their calculation is precise.

The DD should be calculated on the ACTUAL amount of the bill not of the energy used as they're not the same if you have solar or charge anytime, etc

I had the same problem and contacted OVO. The maximum they were allowed to reduce the DD was £8.

With solar and battery, the actual amount used is about half the monthly DD as calculated by the algorithm.

The monthly rebate from Battery Boost do not seem to be taken into account hence the credit balance continues to increase.

God knows its simple enough base it on the BILL not energy used! I was nearly £700 in credit at one stage. My credit is currently increasing by on average £40 a month!
