Is your smart meter display screen ‘asleep’?
Your smart meter screen will be blank or ‘asleep’ until you press a button. If you have a SMETS1 ‘Secure’ smart meter, that’s any button on the keypad. See this topic for more info on SMETS1 and SMETS2 blank screens.
Is your smart meter display broken?
If your smart meter screen stays blank, even after you’ve pressed buttons, it might indicate a fault with the meter screen. Have a look at this topic to test and diagnose communication issues, as it might just be the screen that’s faulty, with the meter being able to send us your readings remotely.

What happens if the smart meter battery had died?
Gas smart meters have an internal battery, which will eventually run out. Its life span is 10+ years, with meters scheduled to be replaced sooner then that.
