If you've got a Smart meter which was installed by another supplier, the best way to know whether it will work when switching to OVO is to check whether it is a first generation (SMETS1) or second generation (SMETS2) Smart Meter. If the meter is a Landis and Gyr model (these were often installed by British Gas) you can find out how to tell whether it is SMETS1 or SMETS2 on our handy guide.
All SMETS2 meters are compatible with OVO so will continue sending the meter readings automatically when you switch. If you have an SMETS1 meter this may not be instantly compatible, so you may have to provide manual meter readings in the meantime - you can submit these on the ‘Meter Readings’ page of your online account or OVO app (download for Android or iOS).
All SMETS1 meters are due to be remotely upgraded to SMETS2 functionality, you can find more about this (including the time frame for when this should be completed for your meter type) here.

Thank you Emily_OVO. Appreciate clarifying the smart meter problem. I will be happy to switch to quarterly readings, but I'm not on Facebook or Twitter.
I will wait until you roll out your compatible SMETS2 meters next year to save upgrading. What surprises me is why BG didn't think of that when they installed their smart meters, perhaps they felt confident that none of their clients would switch!!!

No worries,
If you get in touch with the team through webchat on the Help Centre, they'll get the quarterly billing sorted for you.
Thanks,
Emma
