OVO Smart meter sizes - Secure SMETS1 and Aclara SMETS2

We switched to OVO some time ago from British Gas who’d already installed smart meters. Crazily the BG smart meters can’t be read by OVO. About 18 months ago an OVO engineer came to fit new meters & we found that while the electric meter
could be swapped within the available space the gas meter couldn’t as the model OVO uses is bigger than the BG one. As we’d just finished a cellar conversion we didn’t want new cupboards etc ripped out to accommodate new OVO meters. Does anybody know if there are now smaller gas smart meters same sort of size as BG version now available?

Looking to get a smart meter installed?

OVO are currently installing Aclara S2 electricity meters and Flonidan S2 gas meters. To check whether these would fit in your current meter space, see the meter dimensions below.

Size of our SMETS2 meters

Aclara V2.5/ Elster Electricity Meter

Height = 16 cm

Width = 13 cm

Depth = 6.5 cm

Flonidan/Honeywell Gas Meter

Height = 26 cm

Width = 23.5 cm

Depth = 17 cm

Size of our SMETS1 meters

We previously installed Secure S1 smart meters with the following measurements:

Electricity meter

Height - 178mm

Width - 146mm

Depth - 64mm

Gas meter

Height - 264mm

Width - 235mm

Depth - 174mm

Why are the new Smart Meters so large, compared to the units they are suipposed to be replacing.

We have a GEC C11B which is  175 x 136 x 112mm. This is one of the most commonly fitted meters in the UK.   The current electric smart meters being installed by OVO are larger than this, and there is no extra space available on our electricity distribution board.

Why did the brains behind the smart-meter scheme not look at the size of the existing meters, and ENSURE that they could do like-for-like swap-outs, with the cable connectors in the same place as the old units.

We would like to get the meter replaced, but I cannot afford to rip cupboards and walls out to do it.

I’m not sure which meters you’re referring to @TFS but we had an Aclara version fitted a year and a half ago. It is really compact at 103x106x65 so should be good for your situation. They have changed a lot since the first units

Part of the spec is that Smart Meters MUST fit within the same space as the one you already have too. Where did you get your information from?
