I have smart meters already - do I need yours fitted?

I am happy to read the meter every month - its not difficult. I will wait awhile until the new smart Meters come out before upgrading/changing
If I have a Smart meter already installed with a in house display which was fitted by my previous energy supplier, will I have to have new meters fitted or just an "IN H0USE DISPLAY UNIT" when OVO install one

Hey meandher,

I’ve moved your topic over here as I’m hoping you’ll find what you’re looking for on this thread. :)

I understand that the original smart meters were generally supplier specific and if you swapped supplier then the meter was not compatible and the new supplier wouldn't be able to receive readings.

I understand from Ofgem that 2nd generation meters were being rolled out from Autumn 2017 and these are supposed to be cross supplier compatible.

Does anyone have any experience of these ?

It seems pointless to have a Smart Meter if it is not compatible with other suppliers.

I asked the question to OVO Customer Service but just got a standard reply that they make life easier and "could" be compatible if a moved supplier.
Hey @Johnr08

Thanks for posting! I've moved your query over to our existing smart meter discussion. Just take a look at the comments above. 😃

Cheers,

I started my supply with Ovo on 12th Dec. I have a recently installed NPower Smart Meter (which I assume is 2nd Gen and therefore capable of being taken on by Ovo?).

The remote display is still working but it is showing my NPower tariff info.

So....will Ovo be able to take over the smart meter?
If so will this happen automatically or do I need to do something or tell them?

Once it's working does that relieve me of the need to give a meter reading every 3 months in order to get my online discount?

Thanks for any wise advice!

Hey @Jona6tc - I've moved your post over here. Check out the 'best answer' on the first page - this should answer your question about meter compatibility.

As far as I'm aware, NPower don't use the same 'Secure' branded smart meters as us, so they would need exchanging.
I have a smart metre from my previous supplier, do I need to change it?
