Hi @Nathano

@Mattj3135 is spot on in saying that these fittings need to be based on a case by case basis. With your set up, it sounds like the engineer couldn't fit the gas smart meter as your meter box is semi concealed, meaning it's half dug into the ground.

Some of these boxes are big enough to fit the meter, as long as the engineer has a bracket on them to ensure they can tilt the meter upwards. However for prepayment customers, we don't fit them. The meter screen would be too close to the meter box wall even with the bracket, which isn't suitable for prepayment customers, as they need to use the meter's keypad to reconnect after going off supply.

If you want me to call the engineer and make sure this is the reason the meters couldn't be fitted, send us a message on Facebook or Twitter with your account number, full name and DoB. If you don't use social media send the team an email on hello@ovoenergy.com.

A quick last note: I've edited the title and moved the topic to the All about energy forum, to help other users with the same query find it.

Thanks,
Tim

Well, this is hilarious...

... at the end of this afternoon I received a phone call from OVO asking if I wanted a Smart Meter installed!! I was informed that there are Installers in my area. Whoopie!

I replied that I was very keen to have Smart Meters, provided they were SMETS2 of course. And I then helpfully pointed out that I was a Ninja on the Forum, answering questions about that very subject.

There was a moment of silence at the other end...

I repeated that I was a Ninja... a technical specialist.

"Oh!" came the reply. "Well I'm not sure about that yet - I only started working for OVO yesterday!"

So @Tim_OVO would you please use internal mail to send a message to Harry with my best wishes; and give him a quick overview of the Forum's role, including a definition of a Ninja!

To his credit, he was excellent at his job. Whilst still online he checked to see which Smart Meter version was being offered, and confirmed it was the SMETS1 style.

We also briefly discussed semi-concealed gas meter boxes, and that there is a potential issue with the lid. So at least he now has a bit more background info on what needs to be considered for a meter installation.

I look forward to hearing from Harry again... once he can offer me a nice new pair of SMET2s of course. 😀
@Tim_OVO

Thanks for your response and advice, however, I have already spoken to Customer Services and I was told that apparently you are getting new smart meters to fit semi-contained meters at the end of January 2019. I shall be contacting OVO Customer Services again at the beginning of February to see if they have arrived.

Would that make OVO the first Supplier to offer a Smart gas-meter box with a Transparent lid?

Semi concealed meter boxes, a tough one when it comes to smart meters!

@Kimmi54 I feel your pain, it sounds like you've had a long wait! Best to reach out to our Customer Care team for updates on this. This forum is more for users to advise each other:

- Send over a PM via Facebook: https://en-gb.facebook.com/ovoenergy/
- A DM via Twitter: @OVOEnergy
- Email us at: hello@ovoenergy.com

@Transparent if you can create and build a new meter lid that will allow either generation of smart meter safely and in a way that allows it to function, then I'm hopeful we'd be able to fit one subject to availability. Send a picture once it's made so we advise using those contact details above. Although don't forget to share it with us here!

Well I'd like an update on this subject too @Kimmi54

It feels very odd answering numerous questions on the Forum about the amazing features of the newer SMETS2 meters when I still have clockwork ones myself!

When I enquired last summer, I understood that OVO were to change the supplier of smart gas meters once they moved on from installing the earlier SMETS1 version. However, I then learned that this change didn't occur.

I believe the problem is relatively minor in that the lid of the semi-concealed box won't completely close once the Smart Gas Meter is installed. As I own a 3D printer, I reckon I could modify the lid & hinge arrangement and have it closing again within a few hours!

So @Tim_OVO and @Eva_OVO ... is there anything you'd be able to tell us about what changes are intended for the end of the month?
Not the answer I was hoping for OVO!

I rang and spoke with your customer services yesterday who told me that you are getting new smart meters that should fit semi-contained meters at the end of January 2019. So I want to know if your new meters will fit my gas one as per my pics below and if not I shall find another energy supplier who has one that does!

Take a look through this topic for more information on this , @Kimmi54.

Ideally all homes should have smart meters by 2020 - but it's not the law. There will always be cases where smart meters can't be installed.
I have been a OVO customer for nearly 3 years and one of my reasons for changing was to have a smart meter installed. OVO told me when I first joined that I could not have one fitted to my gas meter because it was semi-contained in the ground and that in the future they were hoping to rectify this by getting smart meters that can fit semi-contained meters. After ringing them today, again I was told the same thing! As it is the law that by 2020 all homes MUST be fitted with a smart meter, how do OVO intend to resolve this issue for their customers because I am sure that I am one of hundreds of thousands of customers that has properties with semi-contained gas meters? Surely OVO will need to have smart meters to fit semi-contained ones by 2020 and if so, when? Because if not, they are going to lose many customers I have no doubt! Is it a case of leaving OVO and finding a supplier who already have smart meters to fit semi-contained ones and is it just OVO with this problem? Because some semi-contained meters are different, I have attached a photo of my gas meter and am hoping that OVO can help me get my smart-meter fitted soon otherwise I have no other option but to go elsewhere! Any advice/help would be much appreciated!

Kangaroo?

Bah! He claimed to be a rat.
Said he was out of work since being an Extra in the latest series of Poldark.

I was about to evict him anyway. Look what he's done to last month's gas bill...

Hi Moderators,

So can you tell just by looking at this semi-concealed gas-meter box whether there's room enough for the Smart Meter to be fitted?

How important is it that the lid can close right down?

Thanks

SMETS2 haven't been rolled out yet @Jenni_Treehouse but keep your eyes peeled as we'll make sure it's announced when they are!
You won't be charged @Jasper unless the reason for the failed appointment was because of something we've already ruled out with you.

As for a smart meter in a semi concealed meter box, your best bet is to wait until the SMETS 2 meters get rolled out on a larger scale later in 2018. No promises but these are a different design to the ones that don't fit!

Tim

Hi Tim,

I had a smart meter appointment a few years ago and the engineer fitted me a smart electricity meter but informed me I could not have smart gas meter as mine is also semi concealed. I just wondered now that we are a few months into 2018 whether these SMETS 2 meters are now more widely available?

Thank you

Jenny
Hey @Tony99

You can view your monthly smart meter readings via your My OVO online account or smartphone app. I've attached a handy link with more information on this: https://www.ovoenergy.com/ovo-answers/topics/my-ovo/what-does-the-ovo-app-do-for-customers-who-pay-monthly.html.

Thanks,
Emily
Hi Lucy I did receive an IHD but this doesn't let you see the actual meter reading just the usage. Although this would seem a basic it's not, so if I want to be able to get a meter reading without crawling about on the floor I have to buy another IHD. Rather disappointing.

@Tony99- If you had opted in to receive an IHD when your smart meter was fitted, then the engineer should have provided this during the smart meter installation.

If one wasn’t provided, we can request this for you. All you’ll need to do is get in touch with the Social team on Facebook or Twitter and they’ll be happy to get one sent.

Lucy
It appears there is a lot of inconsistency here as I've just had a smart gas meter fitted in a semi concealed box with no comment but I can't easily read it because the display is too low down and not slanted as the old meter was. I've been told by OVO if I want to be able to read the meter without crawling about on the ground or using a camera I can buy myself a Chameleon HID (but didn't say where or the cost). How naff is that?
I suppose at least I've got a smart meter and can monitor the usage even if I can't easily get an actual meter reading.
The only other thing is the pipes foul on the box lid which seems dodgy but OVO CS didn't comment on this when I asked.
Hey @tinfoiltom

I've moved your post over to an existing topic which best answers your query.

Cheers,
Emily
I received the OVO invitation. I went through the application procedure, which ended by having a response “you can’t have a Smart meter”, but with no explanation as to why not. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to resolve it?

Hi I have a partly buried gas meter and have a smart meter installation booked.
Is it possible to have one installed? as after reading other posts there seems to be issues with this type of installation.

Hi @BriBarty

Check out the 'best answer' (at the top) for more info on this semi concealed meter. If you wanted to confirm what the deal is for your set up, it's best to give our Customer Service team a call so they can run through the requirements and help come to a conclusion on this one for you.

Thanks,

David, cannot answer your question regarding the OVO meters, but did you get charged for the engineers aborted visit? Not found an OVO answer to this question.
