Green Energy - what does it mean to you?

Green energy is very important to me, i believe we live in an age where this should be the only option by now anyway.
However, i am on your Greener Energy 100% renewable electricity tarif and very happy.
Can i ask, how do you ensure that it IS in-fact 100% renewable electricity that you are supplying to my home?
eg, if i use 300kwh elec, how can i be confident that the 300kwh was in-fact from 100% renewals?

In answer to your query, we can’t guarantee that the energy you use in your house will have come from 100% renewable sources. It’s one big, ever-fluctuating melting pot of energy sources, and the National Grid work hard to ensure that supply always matches demand.

How a 100% renewable tariff fits into this relates to how we pay for your energy. With a fixed tariff such as Greener Energy, we buy the energy in bulk at the start of the contract (so that we can get you the best deal), and in your case, we buy from 100% renewable sources. This page has some more info on these renewable sources. The more customers on these sort of tariffs (higher demand), the greater the proportion of renewable energy sources being sent to your home will be (higher supply)!

I like your prices, your top up mechanism, the smart meter interface with my smartphone - all great. But as a tenant who can only change from a pre-payment /PAYG meter if I fork out a small fortune, it is very frustrating that OVO won't yet guarantee me the use of electricity from renewable sources - that is what I want; and I will shop around for this unless you can provide it..When will you?

Being green to me covers several things: using clean energy as efficiently as possible, recycle as much as possible to reduce landfill (after I campaigned I successfully had recycling facilities installed and provided reducing my landfill waste by a whopping 70%!, looking after the environment and helping to reducemy carbon footprint so I've planted 5 trees and over 7000 wildlife plant seeds this spring after spending the last two years renovating heavily neglected public area, the results of which is a five fold increase in the wildlife in the area and making members of the community very happy indeed! Beimg green doesn't cost the earth

I must admit I may have gone a bit OTT but with the amount of seeds the birds are pinching better to be safe than sorry! I'll post a pic when their flowering

It's a really interesting point that you make. I've added it to a topic on green energy to keep it all in the one place.

As Matt mentioned (nice work as usual @Mattj3135), we buy at least 33% renewable electricity for all of our tariffs. At this moment in time, the costs of getting energy into a prepayment household means that a further increase in price as a result of using renewable energy sources would make our tariff uncompetitive.

As ever though, we will always attempt to match supply with demand. With that in mind, leave a comment below if you'd like to see a prepayment 100% renewable tariff.

So it's been crossing my mind how OVO could offer PAYG customers the option to have some trees planted, which could be part of a 100% renewable PAYG tarrif - given we have established it would be neigh on impossible to work out an interest perk (previous topic I posted) for PAYG customers - could OVO please look at an offer to plant say one or two trees for every 6 months a PAYG customer is with them that would run alongside your pay monthly tree planting programme??? If you did I don't think I'd ever leave you

Green energy is important for all people. It saves the earth and saves human livings. We should limit the use of fossil fuels. Solar energy and wind energy are available

I switched to Ovo because I believed it meant that none of my gas would come directly or indirectly from fracking. Ovo are pretty quiet about fracked gas, there's nothing on the website and the one statement I read which made me switch to Ovo in the first place "the company does not buy any of its energy from fracking or shale gas producers" has now disappeared from the page it was on. What's the deal Ovo? Are you directly or indirectly buying gas from fracking? because that's not what I signed up for and I'd appreciate an open and honest response on this please.
