So your economy 7 meter gives you off-peak cheap electricity, but when is it cheapest?

So, some people are lucky enough, or unlucky enough depending on your lifestyle choices, to live in a house with a Dual-Rate meter. You probably didn't know you had one when you moved in. You checked the area, the schools, the bus-routes etc, but it didn't cross your mind to count the registers on your electricity meter. Of course not... No-one does that...

Dual-Rate meters have TWO registers, Peak and Off-Peak, sometimes labelled Normal and Low, or even a cheerful little Sun and Moon. Off-Peak electricity is charged at close to HALF the unit rate.

Lemme say that again. HALF. Half price electricity...

Usually there are 7 hours of off-peak timing, which is why it's sometimes called Economy 7. Some people think it means Economy After 7pm. It doesn't...

But are you Sure you know exactly WHEN your seven hours are? Many of them are Midnight til 7am, or 00:30 to 07:30... But there Are some weird and wonderful set-ups out there...

There's even Economy 10, for example. Off peak electricity with timing like :
0000 - 0500
1300 - 1600
2000 - 2200

That means that even if your washine machine can't go on after midnight because of kids, or because it doesn't Do that, you can pop it on for a bit in the early afternoon, or just after dinner, and still get half price leccy. So it makes sense to Know When...

Now, some new meters kindly have the timings printed on the meter, but older ones Don't. So, how are you supposed to find out When your cheap electricity is?

Well, one way is to ask your energy provider, but i'm not encouraging everyone to pick up the phone, the good guys at OVO already work hard enough...

But I wonder if the Mods here can help...

I'm guessing that at least some of the Forum Moderators work at OVO, and so have access to the database with the codes for the dual-rate timings...

What if people could ask to know their Off-Peak times on here? A Mod could kindly look it up and reply...

I get that it's not a good idea to post your address on here, and no-one ever knows their MPAN, but it could be done by Meter Serial Number...

Whaddya think folks? Mods and contributors alike...

Similarly, if I've failed to think of something and this idea actually bites real hard, feel free to comment also....

That’s a great idea, and us Mods are well up for helping OVO Forum users. If you'd like to know your peak and off peak times, just send one us a PM with your Meter Serial Number (MSN).

@Nancy_OVO, @Eva_OVO and @Amy_OVO can all help you as well as me!

One last thing, I’ve edited the title of this topic, to help users find it when searching for certain key words.

I've just noticed how many responses there have been to this thread, and while clearly it's proving to be useful to many, I'd like to sincerely apologise to Tim, Lucy and Emma for the inadvertent creation of so much extra work...

I should add to this that my (Chameleon Technology's IHD3-CAD) smart meter tells me when its cheap rate, but... .either its slightly wrong, or it changes according to BST and GMT.

The smart meter said off-peak rate kicked in at midnight during the winter, but now it starts at 1am now its summer.
Thanks @Lucy_OVO :)

If it helps anyone else, after posting my request here I found the information hidden on one of the "pages" / "views" on the remote display unit from my smart meter. It shows the times / rates in a list.

Hi my MPAN XXXXXXXXXXX and I have an Better Energy Fixed Rate (online) with Economy 7 Tariff that I've just signed up to in December. Can you firstly tell me what the E7 times for my area are please;

secondly, i have storage heaters and hotwater that come on at night automatically--how is the timing for this set, and do i need to check it comes on at the right time?

finally, I also have a white digital dual meter, does this switch all my other electric use from everything else onto the night tariff during E7 hours?
Thanks

Hi @ColdBod,

I've looked up your MPAN and your switching intervals are as follows:

Peak: 23:30 to 1:30 and 6:30 to 21:30
Off Peak: 1:30 to 6:30 and 21:30 to 23:30

I appreciate your point about finding out this information. We're happy to do it here, and customers can also call or email our Customer Services team if they need to find out. Unfortunately it is a manual process finding out, and not one that's inbuilt into our signup process. This is because only some customers have Economy 7 meters, and of those, some sign up for single rate tariffs anyway, so their switching intervals won't make any difference to price.

In terms of your storage heaters, this should work on a timer much like a timer on a boiler. To make best use of your Economy 7 rates, I'd advise making sure the heaters are only coming on during the off-peak intervals.

I'm not sure what the white device is - can you let me know the make or model of it, or better yet send a photo?

Hope this helps,
Nancy

Hey @HevBuckwell- Your Peak times run from 0730 to 0030 and your Off Peak times are from 0030 to 0730.

@Steve_D - I’m not sure what that number is! I’ll need either your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) or your Meter Serial Number (MSN). Your MPAN can be found on any statements and is 21 digits long. Your MSN can be found on your meter engraved onto the meter box or on a sticker attached to the meter.

Alternately, private message me your address and I can help further. 🙂

Have just joined forum. Forgive my ignorance if I am in wrong place. An unsure silver surfer.

My meter serial no is XXXXXXXXXX. I need to get my economy 7 times. Also could you say whether the times are given for GMT or British Summer time. Thank you so much.

Hi @Sallylyn thanks for posting.

@Tim_OVO please can you let Sally know and merge this post the the relevant topic which Sally may find useful too. Thank you in advance 🙂
Big help. Thanks Emma.

If you have a smart meter, the IHD (In-house Display) shows you your night hours on the tariff page . Mine currently shows 0100-0800.
Sadly that isn't reflected on the Web page for My Profile where I can only see the tariff prices. The app is merely an interface to the Web site.
Wow! Thank you very much

Been religiously switching on appliances at 1pm & turning off at 4pm, plus same 8pm-10pm, only to find cheap rate hasn't been kicking in till 2pm and 9pm - and this has been going on since meter installed in 2014! When I picked the Eco10 for new house, Ovo had assured me that the new meters self-adjusted to standardise times throughout the year, and I didn't have to adjust my usage according to GMT/BST.

They're onto this and looking into it now, but has anyone else had the same problem?

I have a smart meter. I think its easier to forget about BST and GMT. I just remember that in the winter period its 00.00 to 07:00 and in the summer 01:00 to 08:00.

Incidentally I find I save rather more than I expected using the cheap rate. I have put my dish washer and clothes washer on might use and set my PHEV (car) to be fully charged just at the end of the cheap period. With a little effort dual pricing can save real dosh!
Thank you Tim, very useful.
Further to my PM, I've uploaded a photo of my Home Display, showing what appear to be the E7 times. (I would've attached it to a PM, but that only appears to be possible on the first one.)

Hi @Anand

Your off peak times are:

Midnight to 5am

1pm to 4pm

8pm to 10pm

These times are accurate as of now, but will shift forward one hour during BST.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Having just bought our first all electric car, we are keen to charge up on our overnight rate. Our meter has two readings (which we dutifully supply to Ovo monthly) but we don't know what times apply for the cheaper over-nigh tariff.

Our MPAN is XXXXXXXXXXXX

Can you advise please ?

Many thanks.
Hi, could you please tell me my economy 7 time . Serial no XXXXXXXXXX. Thank you.
