So your economy 7 meter gives you off-peak cheap electricity, but when is it cheapest?

So, some people are lucky enough, or unlucky enough depending on your lifestyle choices, to live in a house with a Dual-Rate meter. You probably didn't know you had one when you moved in. You checked the area, the schools, the bus-routes etc, but it didn't cross your mind to count the registers on your electricity meter. Of course not... No-one does that...

Dual-Rate meters have TWO registers, Peak and Off-Peak, sometimes labelled Normal and Low, or even a cheerful little Sun and Moon. Off-Peak electricity is charged at close to HALF the unit rate.

Lemme say that again. HALF. Half price electricity...

Usually there are 7 hours of off-peak timing, which is why it's sometimes called Economy 7. Some people think it means Economy After 7pm. It doesn't...

But are you Sure you know exactly WHEN your seven hours are? Many of them are Midnight til 7am, or 00:30 to 07:30... But there Are some weird and wonderful set-ups out there...

There's even Economy 10, for example. Off peak electricity with timing like :
0000 - 0500
1300 - 1600
2000 - 2200

That means that even if your washine machine can't go on after midnight because of kids, or because it doesn't Do that, you can pop it on for a bit in the early afternoon, or just after dinner, and still get half price leccy. So it makes sense to Know When...

Now, some new meters kindly have the timings printed on the meter, but older ones Don't. So, how are you supposed to find out When your cheap electricity is?

Well, one way is to ask your energy provider, but i'm not encouraging everyone to pick up the phone, the good guys at OVO already work hard enough...

But I wonder if the Mods here can help...

I'm guessing that at least some of the Forum Moderators work at OVO, and so have access to the database with the codes for the dual-rate timings...

What if people could ask to know their Off-Peak times on here? A Mod could kindly look it up and reply...

I get that it's not a good idea to post your address on here, and no-one ever knows their MPAN, but it could be done by Meter Serial Number...

Whaddya think folks? Mods and contributors alike...

Similarly, if I've failed to think of something and this idea actually bites real hard, feel free to comment also....

That’s a great idea, and us Mods are well up for helping OVO Forum users. If you'd like to know your peak and off peak times, just send one us a PM with your Meter Serial Number (MSN).

@Nancy_OVO, @Eva_OVO and @Amy_OVO can all help you as well as me!

One last thing, I’ve edited the title of this topic, to help users find it when searching for certain key words.

Tim

Hi @Anand

Your off peak times are:

Midnight to 5am

1pm to 4pm

8pm to 10pm

These times are accurate as of now, but will shift forward one hour during BST.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

I have just joined  OVO and gave my meter reading. I found out I have an Economy 7 plan.

My details:

*Removed by mod*

Please, could you let me know my peak and off-peak hours and whether this is for both BST and GMT or if I need to factor that change in myself?

Many thanks,

Pietro

Hi @Vivalasilburn,

I've edited out your MSN for security purposes. Unfortunately, I couldn't find an entry for it on the national database. Could you send me a PM with your address and post code, or MPAN instead?

Cheers

During BST your off peak times would be between 1am and 8am! Sorry this wasn't made clear over the phone, @ledborough.
Hi, I have an Economy 7 tariff. When I asked your helpline for the timings they said 00:00 through 07:00 was the night tariff. This morning, I happened to be near the IHD and I saw that the tariff changed at 08:00. Is this because the tariff is always at GMT and I will have to make allowance for BST myself?

Hi there
I have an OVO Energy account and live in Hackney, London, N16 . There is a dual electricity meter which reads low (night) and high (daytime) tarifs. In addition, I have a timer to set when the electricy can come on and off in my flat. My meter serial number is L74A02167.

Can someone inform what the peak and off-peak hours are so I can set this up. Also is this BST or GMT or whether it makes no difference as the meter automatically makes allowances for the changes? Thank you.

This has been answered on another topic, @JeffC.

Hello. Could you tell me my economy 7 times. My MPAN is edited
Here's a suggestion - add this information to the monthly statements, or include it in the My Plan section of OVO PAYM, everything else is in there.
Thanks

Your off peak times are between 2230-0030 and 0230-0730, @Chief57.

I can't find your meter using that serial number, @Dickerydock, but it looks like a SMETS2 serial number. All SMETS2 meters are set the same, your off peak times would be between 00:30-0730.
Thanks Nancy_OVO. Any chance you can let me know what my cheapest times are or are they on one tariff?

Thanks again..l

Hey @Chief57 - glad to see you figured this one out! I've moved your posts onto this topic where you can find more information about Economy 7 meters if you need it 🙂
Oops! Just confirmed with my current supplier that whilst I have a Economy 7 meter, I am not on a E7 tariff! Apologies for confusion.....
Hi, I’m just about to switch to OVO on 28 Mar but when I signed up to OVO, I think I said I wasn’t on Economy 7 but I am. I’ve now been asked for my meter readings. My details are:

Account number: edited
My OVO ID: edited

will that make a difference?

My apologies for the confusion but I didn’t know I was on E7 as I’ve always associated it with night storage heaters which I do not have.
my smart meter no is edited when is my cheap rate
