So your economy 7 meter gives you off-peak cheap electricity, but when is it cheapest?

Thanks Emma. Forgive me but the use of the term peak usage is confusing. Could I confirm my understanding please. Are you saying that my higher rate is applicable during the night between 1.30am and 6.30am and during the evening between 9.30pm and 11.30pm? If so, am I correct in thinking that my lower rate is between 11.30pm and 1.30am and between 6.30am and 9.30pm? Many thanks, Alty

Sorry for the confusion, @Alty

By off peak I mean the lower rate and by peak I mean the more expensive rate. So it's cheaper for you to use your electricity between 21:30 and 23:30, then again 01:30 - 06:30.

Thanks,
Emma

Sure thing, @netimka

Your smart meter has an off peak time of 00:00 - 07:00 and a peak time of 07:00 - 00:00. The meter has a timeswitch so doesn't automatically adjust to the seasonal clock changes. For example, as we're in British Summer Time (BST) at the moment your off peak is 01:00 - 08:00.

Hope this helps!

thanks Emma, its good to know that 🙂

If you have a smart meter, the IHD (In-house Display) shows you your night hours on the tariff page . Mine currently shows 0100-0800.
Sadly that isn't reflected on the Web page for My Profile where I can only see the tariff prices. The app is merely an interface to the Web site.

My meter serial no is XXXXXXXXXX. I need to get my economy 7 times. Also could you say whether the times are given for GMT or British Summer time. Thank you so much.

Hi @Sallylyn

I've moved your comment, as there's already a topic that is just for this very question!

I've used that meter serial number (MSN) on the national database, but it won't bring up any results. I'll PM you in a minute so you can send over your full address instead.

Thanks,
Tim
Tim, Hope this gets me through to you. Those times you gave me , 23.30 to 7.30 GMT and 00.30 to 8.30 BST are 8 hour periods, not 7 hour. I'm on Economy 7 so that can't be right, can it?

I've double checked this and these are right @Sallylyn. The economy 7 time period can vary across the country and can be any variation of times between 10pm and 8:30am.

Wow! Thank you very much

That’s a smart meter @trainersbuk

This one changes over from 00:00-07:00 GMT. So when it’s BST, that will become 01:00-08:00.

Hope this helps,

It's weird, some dual rate meters know to adjust for BST, so your off-peak times are the same all year round, but some you have to factor that in yourself... I'd always kinda assumed that Old ones you have to do maths for it, Newer ones are somehow connected to Greenwich...

but see now i write that down in Actual words it seems insane. Do some e7 meters not track BST, and how do you know if Yours does...?

I can't find that meter on the national database, @cheekysteveuk - I'll PM you now to confirm your full address instead. :)

I've just bought an electric car, so charging it off peak would be a good idea. Please could you tell me the times when my Economy7 is off peak? MPAN is XXXXXXXXXXXX. Many thanks.

Sure thing, @Tallorder - this is an interesting one!

Your meter is a teleswitch first off, which means it adjusts when the clocks change between GMT and BST. The times remain the same, which is handy. What's interesting about this meter is that you have 1 of your 7 hours of off peak usage between 23:00-00:00, then the other 6 from 01:00-07:00. Handy as the first hour is earlier then usual, but if you plug your new electric car in at that time, bear in mind the 1 hour of peak usage you'll also get.

This is why it's good to check these things. :P

Tim
Thank you Tim, very useful.
Hello

From my smart meter monitor, it looks as though my Economy 7 hours are 01:00 to 08:00. I would be grateful if you could confirm this.

Meter serial no: XXXXXXXXXX.

Many thanks.

Hey @fraser

You've got a smart meter so your off peak time is 00:00 - 07:00 and your peak time is 07:00 - 00:00.

The meter has a timeswitch so doesn't automatically adjust to the clock changes. For example, as we're in British Summer Time (BST) at the moment your off peak is 01:00 - 08:00.
