New fixed rate tariffs a good idea?

Tried to find out more as an OVO customer about fixed rate tariff rates which have been cited by BBC etc. Section on OVO app (about tariffs available) says unavailable when clicked on. I don't think OVO would offer me anything which would benefit me as a customer rather than OVO as a business.

Is the reporting of cheaper fixed rate tariff orchestrated to attract new customer,s or is there some truth involved?

Those tariffs are on offer, just not in all circumstances.

They are legit but you ultimately don’t have to take it. It’s there if you want it, but only if you want it.

No tricks, ploys or scams either, since you’re not forced to take it either.

It’s an interesting debatable topic at present, although there are conditions for the offer.  Obviously a judgment call as to whether costs and therefore tariffs will continue to fall or not. As with every choice in terms of options, this would be a personal decision - the same as any other service being offered.
My own view is that there will be a few more twists as we struggle with the idea of options of choosing when to consume energy based on cost and carbon emissions

Hi @Billwithbrokenovoapp

Welcome to the customer forum, i am just a customer like you.

Do you mean this page?

https://products.ovoenergy.com/journey/renewal/energy-renewal

Do you have a smart meter?

Do you pay by Direct Debit?

I am not actually sure who can currently see the new fixed rate offer, i can see it for example.

I should also say that at present the fix tariff has been made unavailable due to rises in the wholesale cost of gas over the last week or so. We aim to make this available again very soon and everyone offered it in their price increase notification letter/email can still take up the offer via our Support team

Prices over last 6 months and 1 month

And 1 week

Gas prices are basically at the level they were August 2021

Interesting, thanks for sharing these, @Jeffus! I’m glad to see the recent spike seen in the last month has come back down. I’d expect to see fixed tariffs returning to the market again as a result!

Haven't seen it in the media but I've been trying to figure out if I should fix now or wait till July...

Just over 10% cheaper fixed it seems but estimations of 15% or more in July?

Fixed tariffs seem to change daily for me, well on off sometimes a fixed one with a boiler cover offer

I think this is the right thread for me, so here goes, apologies if it’s not.

Around the end of March, I signed up to a fixed rate tariff for 1 year, commencing on April 1st, as at that time costs  were predicted to continue to rise.

Now though, it’s expected that a new price cap will be introduced this week, so what does this mean for me? What if anything will change or am I tied into paying X per unit/standing charges for the duration of the deal?

If the Energy Price Guarantee is lower than your fix deal, it’ll likely get adjusted accordingly. Otherwise, it’ll remain as-is.

1. The Energy Price Guarantee goes up from £2500 to £3000 on 1st July for an average dual fuel customer paying by direct debit and using 2900kWh electricity and 12000kWh gas. I suspect your fixed rate is less than this.

2. The Ofgem price cap for the 3 months from 1st July is released by Ofgem on Thursday 25th May. This is likely to be less than you are paying. Unfortunately you won't benefit from the reduction unless you cancel your fixed rate and pay the exit fee. You would have to work out if it was worth it.

Thanks for the replies guys, I  thought this would be the case.

The price I was paying before I took my fixed contract was higher than the £3000 cap that’s coming in July, but it allowed us to build up a fair bit of credit through summer/autumn to negate the extra used in winter.

Noticed the gas is slightly under 9p a unit on fixed now, I'm sure it was just above 9p a few days ago
