Hi @Sallyab Thanks for posting your question on here because it is one we get from time to time and one we can’t really answer. The reason is there are so many factors that are individual to you regarding not only your property but also your lifestyle. My recommendation is to always invite a qualified heating engineer to assess your property and what you want out of the heating and hot water as well. Search for: Home Energy Survey Now, a survey may cost you money but a good heating engineer will save you more than you pay for a survey. The survey cost (if there is one) is once but the money saved (or possibly lost by making a decision without advice) is every month. You also need to consider what tariff is best for what ever decision you go with. There are also some blogs on here from people who have had an ASHP installed and I’ll give a shout out to @BPLightlog who produced an excellent blog on the subject from personal experience. Reading it will give you familiarity with the term used and how the process works. If you wish please come back on here with any further questions you may have, possibly arising from a survey or two or after reading the blog. We have volunteers on here who have different experiences of heat pumps (I have an Air to Air heat pump) and their combined knowledge and wisdom is awesome and free of charge. Peter

@DorothyG You didn't mention what tariff you are on but it should be one that gives you off peak rates through the night like THTC, Economy 7 or better Economy 10 that gives you off peak heating blocks through the day and overnight otherwise these heaters would be unaffordable. It probably would take a full 24 hours to build up so for tonight make sure that your output dial is turned right down to minimum and your input dial is turned to the maximum. If they're still only warm in the morning you'll probably need an electrician to check them. These heaters are fitted with elements inside and just like any other appliances they conk out after a while and need replaced ( easily sourced from Amazon) My large heaters have 3 elements but when 1 goes the heat drops and the heaters don't feel warm enough. I am sure an electrician can test them to see if there's power going through. Hope this helpsAm in North East Scotland

I have had an Aclara SGM1416-B for three years now and have never had a moment’s trouble with it. Just curious - did the engineer have any explanation for what you were hearing? And - I suppose equally important - could he hear it himself? Now that I have a reputation for nicheness to maintain, I’d better confess to having looked up an online signal generator to see just what a 7500Hz sine wave sounded like. I couldn’t detect a beep above 7000!

Just an update 21/8 … and a huge thank you to the very knowledgeable - and empathetic - folks who have contributed here.Yesterday, OVO sent a third-party emergency engineer to investigate the meter. He replaced the Kaisa meter with a new Aclara meter, and I’m delighted to report the high-pitched noise has now gone! As recommended by a contributor here, I recorded the new meter using the Spectroid app, and it barely detected any sound - a vast improvement. My tinnitus ears are still screaming but my anxiety is much less. So, credit where credit’s due to OVO, and thanks again for all your replies. Off to seek out some pink noise and a cup of tea.

A smart meter is usually helpful for EV tariffs because the supplier needs accurate half-hourly usage data to calculate the tariff properly. However, not having one installed yet does not always mean you cannot start looking at EV charging options. It depends on the specific tariff requirements from the supplier. If you are planning an EV charger installation, it is worth thinking about the whole setup together:• which EV tariff you want to use• whether the charger can schedule charging automatically• whether you may add solar or battery storage laterOne thing I’d be interested to know is whether you already have an EV, or are you preparing for one in the near future?

Hi @DorothyG Thanks for coming onto the forum to ask the question. I'm not a storage heater expert but I'm guessing the very high temperatures we've had recently have meant that the heaters decided that the room was warm enough not to come on before now. Modern storage heaters will only come on to meet a room temperature demand. I think the old ones just came on anyway which is what you might have been expecting. My suggestion is to assume that the heaters are fine and to monitor the situation as we get into the cooler days of September and October. By then we should have had at least a few cold days to get them to come on properly. If not come back on here with any follow up observations or questions and we will be very happy to talk this through again. Peter

Yeah, it’s also worth mentioning that to re-certify a specific meter would require it to come off the wall anyway, leaving you without power so it’d be swapped regardless - and these days it would be to a Smart Meter.I’ve never known it to be possible to do these tests without pulling at least one of a particular model off the wall and sending it to a lab.

Morning @MandyHale and a warm welcome to the OVO Forum. I hope you’re doing well. The most common cause of this issue that we’re seeing is customers having gas and electricity split over two separate accounts. In this instance, the accounts must be linked under the same email address. This means that, when you log in, you’ll be able to switch between the two accounts, and top up each. It’ll look like this: Please contact our Support Team, who’ll be able to link your accounts together under the same email address and log in, if this is what the issue is. There’s a more unlikely chance that the issue could be because of this: Some customers who cannot see gas or electricity on their app are affected by an issue where one of their smart meters may not be labelled correctly on their energy account, and this must be fixed by our Support Team. Please contact Support, who’ll be able to see what the issue is, and fix it for you. If you could let us know how you get on we’d appreciate it.

The Ampy brand has a chequered history, but as far as the GB electricity market is concerned, it ceased to exist after 2009. Any AMPY 5235 meter manufactured before 2007 is now out of certification, and the supplier responsible for it is bound by the supply licence to exchange it for a certified one, which nowadays means a smart one. Plug-in solar panels don’t require any particular variety of meter, unless you’re hoping to be paid for any energy you pass back to the grid. That may be an interesting exercise in bureaucracy since it looks like the maximum installed power per household is 0.8kW. SMETS2 smart meters are capable of measuring energy exported. That said, if your meter’s certification has expired, you have really no choice in the matter. Octopus are quite within their rights to insist on exchanging it, and could even get the court’s permission to do it against your will if you make it difficult for them. It’s a windmill not worth tilting at.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. This afternoon I sat in car I looked at all settings and I had release connector at end of charge set. The car was plugged in and not charging, it was at 80%, the car showed it as plugged in, ovo app said "not plugged in". When I set that setting to off quite shortly after the OVO app said "ready to charge".I wonder. It will be a few days before I need a recharge, but I live in hope :)It's a shame I don't know anyone with a dumb charger to try to see if it's my charger. But after the error if I restart it starts charging straight away so im suspecting charger ok and it's a server/car/app communication issues. Thanks tho and if course will post if that settings makes it work again. Tho I'd had it set like that for ages.

Octopus tell me that its calibration certificate has expired and that it must be replaced with a smart meter. Apparently they cannot re-certify the meter (I asked). I suspect they are coercing me into having a smart meter.I am considering the new plug in solar panels, and I guess this could also affect which meter I need.Any comments please.ThanksTonyZ

You could describe pink noise as have a low, medium or high frequency characteristic where as white noise can’t be described as that. True pink noise sounds like a low frequency noise. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_noise Peter

Hi @Anni_F I’ve done some spectrum and sound pressure level measurements on my meter which is also an MA120 and I’ve found the following things. This is from the Spectroid app on my phone The predominant frequency of the tone is 1642 Hz and the SPL on my Mastech MS8229 (multimeter with an ‘A Weighted’, human hearing response) is 57dB. Tinnitus is normally only caused by sustained SPLs of 90dB and above which is 1,000 times louder. SPLs are measured in decibels and it’s a logarithmic scale. An increase of 10dB is a sound that is 10 times louder, 20dB, 100 times etc. The sound is coming from the lower part of communications module and is substantially even from side to side. As a guide it is quiet in our lounge and the reading is around 58-60dB. Our meter is in a cupboard and with the doors closed I can’t detect any sound at 1642 Hz but it can just detect the 50Hz mains hum. I can understand it is very audible to you and distressing but it is highly likely not to be causing tinnitus due to the sound pressure level. If you think you have tinnitus then I suggest you get that checked out by an audiologist as there may be another cause. Peter

VW ID.3, VW Granny Charger - no schedules or anything set in car, charging only controlled by OVO app , i.e. ready by and 80% limit set.For 18 months this has worked fine, but for the last month it rarely completes a charge. It now stops, the VW app reports charging error and OVO app say “Not plugged in”. The granny charger lights are all green.Have deleted and re loaded both apps, re-registered car, reset anything i can find to reset! No change.I have discovered if I do nothing except click charge on the VW app it starts charging and the OVO app eventually changes to “Smart Charging”. So its clearly not a physical thing or fault with granny charger as it all restarts but may/may not cut out again after a while. Obviously I cant keep checking the app, especially at night :)I think it occurs when OVO reschedules, before the app would say rescheduling to.. and sure enough restart and do this until charge limit reached. Now though something has changed. OVO app, VW servers, who knows? But my question is , am i the only one using this arrangement, is yours fine?Thanksand just about to call ovo - if i get a result obviously i will report back.

Morning @Malgriff, Thanks for letting me know - I’m glad this is (hopefully) fixed for you now. I’ve also reported this internally so hopefully this issue shouldn’t happen to anyone else. I understand that scheduled payments not being a feature anymore will cause dissatisfaction to some customers, however it’s good that you’ve got the option of switching to monthly bills. At the end of the day, this means that you’ll never be cut off, and won’t have to worry about running out of credit. As you’re switching to pay monthly, you’ll notice a change to your online account and app. They’ll now show a lot more features, such as your monthly, weekly and daily usage. You can find out how to navigate all this with these guides: The way you’re billed will now change, as you won’t be topping up the meter, and will be paying your monthly statements either manually, or by Direct Debit (recommended). You can find out more about our billing / payments structure in our Forum Library section here. Please let us know if you have any other questions - we’ll do our best to make the switch to pay monthly (PAYM) as seamless as possible.

Interesting - thanks. That sure is high-pitched. I compared with the highest tone played by the violin in Beethoven’s violin concerto; depending on which cadenza the soloist elects to play, the usual top note is E7, or 2637Hz. Your whine is a great deal higher than that. Listen from about 30 minutes into this ad-free vintage recording: Beethoven Violin Concerto in D major, Op.61 (1959) - YouTube

I forgot to ask - ‘high-pitched’ is a pretty subjective expression. Is this sound in the dog-whistle spectrum, i.e. of the order of 20kHz, or in the range of sounds audible to ordinary humans (20-20kHz)? Knowing that might narrow down the source a bit.

Thanks, Nukecad. Have read about coil whine, so hopefully it is something relatively straightforward(?) that can be rectified by the engineer. Do you know if putting the smart meter into ‘dumb mode’ (ie. ceasing transmission of data) might also be a cure for the whine? We did a spectrograph sound recording (from a phone app) and the sound seemed to be coming from the comms hub part of the meter.

My new KAIFA meter from last October makes a high pitched noise which has a slightly varying frequency rhythm to it. At 75 my hearing is not hypersensitive (it's not poor either) but neither is it noticeable outside of it's cupboard. It has always done it from day one and my previous meter was completely silent. I just noted it as a curiosity. Soundproofing inside an enclosure may be an option if the meter engineer says it's normal. The slight frequency variation occurs when the Impulse led flashes so that speeds up if I put a heavy load on but it doesn't get any louder. As a guess as an electonics engineer I would say it's the small switch mode power supply in the meter feeding low voltage to the processing electronics. As the load changes with the led flashing then the switching frequency changes a bit. Most often this is in the ultrasonic region but if you have a high power SMPS running at a lower than designed load the frequency can drop into the audio range. This is a known phenomena. Peter

Thanks for posting the replies @RadioFox and @snic - and sorry for further confusion. The response I’ve provided was from a manager in our Billing department, so I believe it to be correct. We were looking at the data together and it does, on face value, look as if the reads have been provided by Morrisons Data Services, due to the way they’re listed on the account as engineer’s reads. According to my colleague in Billing, the reason they’re labelled this way is because there was no other suitable criteria to label the readings under when they were submitted onto your account. This is a one-off issue that won’t cause any issues with the charges on the account.

Thank you, Firedog. Yes, the noise is constant 24/7, at the same pitch/frequency. It's not loud as such, but its loud enough that I can hear it especially when upstairs (where the meter is located). So much so, that I'm sleeping on the living room floor to hopefully lessen it! OVO have said that they'll send a third party engineer to investigate, but as I'm in a fairly remote area, I fear I'll be waiting some time.

This sounds uncomfortable, alarming, even. Is the ‘high-pitched sound’ continuous, or if not, how often or at what intervals do you hear it?A smart meter should normally operate quite silently, so what you’re describing warrants closer investigation, perhaps requiring an engineer visit. I don’t know what sort of a reception you’ll get, but the first point of contact will as always be Support. Please try that first, and come back here to tell us what happened.

Hello - hoping someone can help or advise. Newly-fitted smart meter (electricity only) has emitted a high-pitched sound since day one. Not sure if the unit is faulty, but I find the pitch/frequency of this sound extremely distressing, and think it has contributed to me developing tinnitus (and the associated anxiety). Please note that I don’t subscribe to any conspiracy-type theories! … I’m just really really sensitive to this high-pitched sound. Switched everything off at the fuse box to test, but the noise continues. Has anyone else experienced this, and have you resolved it? I have raised a complaint with OVO but they’re slow in responding. I’m desperate to get this sorted. Thank you.

(or even in no name, just “The Occupier”)You do now say that OVO are willing to send an engineer out, they are not “refusing” like you said in your original post.It now appears to be yourself who is refusing to accept an appointment slot. How do you expect an engineer to fix or replace a meter if there is no one at the property to grant them access to do the job?

Morning @Malgriff, and welcome to the OVO Forum. Sorry to hear of what’s happening here. Please can you contact our PAYG Support Team, as they’ll need to look into applying the missing payments. You’ll probably need to send them a screenshot of your bank statement showing the payments that haven’t made it to the meter. Hopefully they can cancel the payments on their side, but it would be worth you contacting your bank as well, as they may be able to block any future payments on their side. I’ve also asked about this internally, and will let you know if I hear a response, however please don’t let this stop you contacting Support yourself, as this needs to be logged on your account properly as a complaint (make sure you request this when you speak to them). Full details of our complaints process can be found here: https://www.ovoenergy.com/feedback Let us know how you get on, and if you have any further questions. We’d appreciate if you could keep us updated with this one.

Hi @ssray23 and thanks for your post. My recommendation would be to contact our PAYG Support Team, and request that they send a remote request called an ‘XJOIN’ via a system called ‘Bol’. They’ll know what this means, and this should hopefully get the device working again (as long as it’s an issue with the IHD, and not the meters themselves). When you speak to them, they’ll be able to have a look at the meters too, to see if everything’s working as it should be. Please let us know how you get on, and whether you have any other questions.

@Blastoise186 Rather what I expected. While my own system can monitor what is happening it's not clear that the official metering can differentiate between sources of energy. The conclusion is that unless you have a solar-aware charger that can properly communicate with CA, do not connect your EV until late enough in the day that your solar panels have stopped generating. Otherwise, you will lose both SEG payment for energy generated and also pay to put that energy into your EV. Easy enough to work around, just a bit of an inconvenience. Something else to bear in mind when looking at supplier options. At least CA is working for me and does what it says on the tin, incompatible charger notwithstanding.

I am aware that the components I am using - in particular, the Ohme charger - are not “compatible” with CA. The charger was not my choice as it is the one supplied with Audis but at the same time, it all works, compatible or not. As I mentioned, I am also aware that very few chargers and certainly not mine are solar-aware. My car was bought in March and my solar panel installation in May so both are fairly new to me. What this means is that I am still getting to understand my pattern of usage, of the car in particular. It’s the breakdown between home and public charging that I need to understand, as well as just how well the solar panels work in my location. For simplicity, I have stayed with Ovo as my existing supplier until I am in a position to look at which supplier is the best match for my needs. It’s not an easy equation to solve so the more data I have on my own use, the better the decision I can reach. So I accept that my current setup is not optimal but it’s not too bad. However, I am also aware that CA is slightly difficult to work with; as an example, back before I had the paperwork in place for selling energy to the grid (it was exporting but I was not being paid) I tried to use my granny charger to use some of that give-away energy to charge my car. However, CA recognised that my car was charging and made me pay for it - although using my own generated energy. I guess that this is what the solar-aware chargers avoid. I can work around this (which I shall do when my CA credit is finished for the month) by unpairing my car temporarily while charging. Messy but it works, and means I “pay” the 12p/kWh that I would have been paid and not 21p that I would otherwise pay. With this previous experience, and coming back to my original question, I know that CA will be taking credit from my account for the energy I was using to charge my car recently, but it comes down to whether or not I shall receive my generation payment, or if I am losing my 12p/kWh if I generate and charge at the same time. One day it will all be simple!

Hiya!Just trying to figure this out at the moment, but I do have a comment - your current setup is NOT compatible with Charge Anytime. To make solar panels play nice with Charge Anytime, you need a compatible Charger that has Solar support - Ohme isn’t one of them and it never was even when they were working with OVO.Since OVO has no way of knowing what’s coming via solar in your setup, you’re paying for solar power going into the EV. You may want to consider a charger swap to something else to prevent future issues.

Bit of background - I drive an Audi EV and have an Ohme home charger. Key points are that the charger is not supported by Charge Anytime but the car is, so I have paired my car with CA and use the charger as a dumb device. That all works fine and once I managed to get all the settings correct I have had no problems and CA decides when the car will charge - I just plug it in and let the system sort things out. I also have a solar panel installation supported by a battery; this is configured to feed the house load, then charge the battery, and then feed to the grid. I have an Ovo account which pays me for uploaded energy as well as providing my usual domestic supply. My charger is not solar-aware, unlike one or two more sophisticated chargers. And now the question! In this recent sunny weather my solar panels have been delivering 5-6kW during the day, most of which is exported and earns me 12p/kWh. I plugged my car in a couple of days ago, mid-afternoon after a long journey so low car battery level. It happened that CA decided to start charging (must have been plenty of cheap electricity on the grid?). I looked at my smart meter a little later and it said I was drawing 2kW from the grid. I concluded, after checking my solar power app, that I was generating 5kW myself and then drawing 2kW from the grid to make up the 7kW going into the car. So how much did my charging cost me? Was I "exporting" 5kW and earning 12p/kWh even though consuming it locally, and then "paying" for the power used in charging - 7kW - with my CA credit? Or will I "pay" with my CA account but not get any credit for power generated because it never actually reached the grid so losing my 12p/kWh? This would effectively more than double the effective price paid for charging. I hope the former but fear the latter. In the meantime I am avoiding plugging in during the day and just plug my car into the charger in the evening to avoid the situation but I am curious to know the answer! I could try to analyse the various bills and payment records but I have little faith that I could decode the arcane payment system associated with CA...
